Hundreds of pool table enthusiasts are expected to flood KICC Comesa grounds to compete and witness a major tournament whose theme us geared towards eradication of gender based violence.
The tournament sponsored by Nairobi businessman Nick Mararo is dubbed Krekit Fest shall also be accompanied by numerous entertainments as well as counselling sessions.
Speaking when he was hosted at Radio Maisha, Mararo urged the youth, particularly university and college students, to refrain from violent reactions even in the midst of frustrations and provocations.
Hundreds of prizes will be won with a grand prize of Ksh350,000 going to overall winner.
Counsellors will be available to advise on the best alternative means of dealing with issues that often culminate into gender based violence.
According to Mararo, alternatives include moving away from toxic environments, behavioral change and endeavouring to have economic empowerment.
Mararo has pledged to sponsor more sensitisation forums slated for Eldoret, Meru and Kilifi before year ends to ensure that the barbaric vice is brought to negligible levels if not totally eradicated.
Gender based violence has been on the rise particularly in the universities where many females students have lost their lives following differences with their lovers, a trend that has worried both the government and parents.
Most police stations have GBV desks but due to the not very civil treatment of victims, many opt to suffer in silence.
The police cannot entirely shoulder the blame as they are not trained in counselling but maintenance of law and order.
Mararo urged all stakeholders particularly parents, education managers as well as business entities to play significant roles in bringing down the outdated practise to enhance civility.
