David Njilithia Mberia is a prolific politician from Meru who has a career spanning for over 30 years. The Young Turk who is in his late forties started activism at a young age of 18 years while still at high school in Lower Eastern region.
He was born in Mairuna village, Muthara ward, Tigania constituency in Meru County in the year 1974. He attended Muthara primary school in Meru before joining Ikutha boys’ high school in Kitui County. Later he joined Kenya Collage of Accountancy (KCA) for a Diploma course.
Mr. Mberia has represented Karen electoral ward for three consecutive times; one as councillor under the old constitution and twice as Member of County Assembly (MCA) under the 2010 Kenyan constitution.
This is a great privileged not only being elected in the city ward but by the high and mighty of the society who reside in Karen part of the city. Only Muthaiga, Gigiri and Runda in Karura Ward as well as Kitisuru in Kitisuru Ward come close to the elegance and class that he represents.
Karen hosts Deputy President William Ruto – both his private and official residences, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, among others. It is also home to senior lawyers, business magnates and expatriates.
Mr. Mberia who hails from an underprivileged family from a remote area of Tigania in Meru County which predominantly has been leaning towards Mt. Kenya originated political parties, did the unthinkable by joining the region’s greatest political antagonists.

Mr. Odinga later had disagreement with NARC Coalition partners and formed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party which he leads to date and through which Mr. Mberia has won thrice as Karen ward representative.
Mr. Mberia played key roles as youth leader in all the formations and his active nature made electorates to have him as their leader of choice.
Mberia’s political journey
While still at high school, Mberia started activism and involvement in national politics soon after getting a national identity card (ID) in the year 1992. The same year he voted for the first time.
This was at a time Kenyan opposition led by the then opposition leader Kenneth Matiba of FORD Asili, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga of FORD Kenya; he was also the father of Raila Amolo Odinga, former President Mwai Kibaki (Democratic Party), and key political activists of the time some of the most prominent were; former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga, lawyers Paul Muite, Senator James Orengo, Martha Karua who is currently the NARC Kenya party leader, Charity Ngilu of NARC, Koigi Wamwere, late Martin Shikuku, Governors; Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) prof. Anyang Nyong (Kisumu) among others.
After completing four form in 1993, Mberia ventured into hardware business in Nairobi.
While running his business, he involved himself with National Development Party (NDP) politics, which was led by Raila Odinga and through which he won the Langa’ta parliamentary seat.
NDP was a political party in Kenya which was of national importance between 1994 and 2001 after which in 2000 NDP started to cooperate with the KANU-government of President Daniel arap Moi. From June 2001 three MPs of NDP among them Mr. Odinga joined the cabinet, thus inaugurating the first coalition cabinet in Kenya’s history.
Mr. Odinga later formed the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in year 2001 where Mr. Mberia found a political home.
He was elected as LDP’s Karen ward Secretary during the grassroot elections where he served until 2005 when Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was formed after the failed constitutional referendum where the Raila led orange-side carried the day flooring the President Kibaki led Banana side.
After the formation of ODM, he was elected ODM Vice chairman Langata Constituency, a role he performed well and the constituents requested him to run for Karen ward as councilor in 2007.
He bowed to people’s pressure, vied and won. That became his first time at the city county as people’s representative.
In 2010 during the second constitutional referendum where both President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga rallied their troop behind the constitutional change, Mberia performed key role and a new constitution came to being.
In 2013, he vied under ODM which was part of CORD Coalition and won as the first MCA of Karen ward under constitution 2010. In the first County Assembly as MCA, he was elected as Majority Chief Whip representing CORD coalition.
He again won in 2017 under the same party, which was then part of NASA coalition. At the assembly he was appointed the Minority Leader representing ODM/NASA. He landed chairmanship of Select Committee on Implementation for Nairobi City County.
In this year August’s general election he intends to vie still under ODM party which will be under Azimio La Umoja which is brought together handshake partners; President Uhuru Kenyatta (Jubilee) and Raila Odinga (ODM) among other parties.
