NARC-Kenya has issued a stark warning to the nation, declaring that the country stands at a critical juncture where the forces of complacency and impunity threaten to overshadow the fundamental principles of justice, equity, and accountability. In a statement read by their party leader Martha Karua, they emphasized that while the wave of protests and dissent that swept across the country may have quieted, the underlying issues remain unresolved, creating an uneasy calm across the political landscape.
Karua highlighted a series of concerns, particularly the abuse of human rights, arbitrary arrests, detentions, and the widespread disobedience of court orders by the government. NARC-Kenya pointed to the case of a court order issued by the Malindi High Court on June 24th and later confirmed on 17th of July after an inter-party hearing. The court order specifically restrained the police from interfering with peaceful protests and prohibited the use of excessive force, including water cannons, tear gas, live ammunition, rubber bullets, or other crude weapons. However, according to tgem, these directives have been blatantly ignored, leading to further erosion of trust in the rule of law.
“The storm that swept across our nation in the form of protests and dissent may have quieted, but the issues that ignited it remain unresolved. What appears to be the quieting of the political storm is but an uneasy calm that leaves unresolved issues simmering beneath it.” Karua Stated.
She also criticized the current administration under President William Ruto for what they described as the “trashing of transparency and accountability,” which are foundational principles enshrined in Article 10 of the Kenyan Constitution, by arguing that lack of accountability has been the root cause of many of the country’s recent ills, including the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which sparked widespread protests due to its perceived disregard for the people’s voice and refusal to allow meaningful public participation.
In addion, NARC -Kenya accused the Ruto administration of attempting to reintroduce aspects of the rejected Finance Bill, such as the fuel levy, without proper consultation with the public and condemned what they termed as the “total opaqueness” surrounding the government’s decision to hand over control of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the Adani Group, a move that has sparked significant opposition, including from airport workers.
“This regime is using the same script to gift our airport the main gateway to our country to the Adani Group in total opaqueness and refusal to hear people’s voices, we must resist these violations of our constitution and basic decency. The country belongs to us, not the ruling elite.” Karua remarked
NARC Party’s statement underscores the growing tension between the government and opposition forces, as well as the broader civil society, over the direction of the country. As the nation navigates these challenging times, the party called on all Kenyans to remain vigilant and to continue demanding respect for the rule of law, human rights, and genuine public participation in the country’s governance.
