The National Construction Authority has halted all activities at construction site number 3438 in Gitara Area, Kikuyu Sub County, after inspectors confirmed a progressive structural failure that posed a grave risk to workers and the public.
According to the Authority, reinforced concrete columns on the ground floor had already developed cracks and signs of buckling, making the structure highly unsafe. The NCA cited serious violations, including failure to register the project with the Authority, use of poor quality materials such as substandard sand, aggregates, and reinforcement steel, and lack of adherence to standard construction methods in formwork and concrete placement.
Following the inspection on Monday, all construction activities were suspended immediately and workers evacuated to ensure safety. The NCA has constituted a multi-agency team comprising officials from the County Government of Kiambu, the National Building Inspectorate, and the Engineers Board of Kenya to conduct a full structural audit of the site.
The Authority has further appointed third party experts led by Engineer Gikandi Johnson Kuguru to oversee the issuance of a demolition permit. The demolition process will also require registration with the NCA before it begins.
The Authority has made it clear that those responsible for the unsafe construction will face legal action and sanctions. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all developments adhere to the National Construction Code 2024 and emphasized that safety remains the top priority.
The NCA has urged members of the public to report any suspected non compliant projects as part of its wider efforts to safeguard lives and property.
