Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria
The Technical, Vocational Education, and Training (TVET) institutions are set to benefit from equipment worth Sh.13 billion from China under a Government-to-Government arrangement. The equipment, which includes advanced technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), will be supplied to various TVET institutions, including mechanical, electrical, and electronic, agricultural machinery, mechatronics, civil and building, welding and fabrication, hospitality management, automotive, and refrigeration and air conditioning departments of the various TVET institutions. The Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria commended the government for its efforts to support the TVET sector, stating that there are currently 240 TVET institutions in Kenya. She also called on the youth to join TVET institutions, stating that TVET CDACC has broken down different training programs into a skill set that allows individuals to gain skills for a short time before starting to earn from them. Dr. Muoria noted that with the Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (KCATS), the youth will be able to move seamlessly in their quest to gain skills in TVET institutions.
Teachers have been urged to postpone their planned strike and allow the government and parliament time to pass a revised finance bill that will factor in their salary increment.
According to Gem member of parliament, Elisha Ochieng’ Odhiambo, there was little that the government can do currently in the face of the rejection of the 2024 finance bill and the subsequent dismissal of the 2023 one by the courts.
He urged teachers to go slowly with their demands and allow parliament to discharge its mandate. “I want to ask teachers to go slowly. Allow us as parliament to pass the reviewed Finance Bill 2024, and you will be paid in arrears,” said Odhiambo during the occasion that was also attended by Gem Yala Deputy County Commissioner, John Otieno.
Red Cross International and the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREW) have provided food to over 100 vulnerable families in Narok town.
Representative from the Red Cross, Representative Elijah Wachira,
emphasised the importance of celebrating the day with the less fortunate to give them hope for a better future. Wachira called on those privileged in society to help the less fortunate so they can lead a decent life. “The small acts of humility you show to people matter a lot because they bring a smile to a vulnerable person. We may not have a lot to feed all vulnerable people in society, but together with other stakeholders, we try to reach out to as many as we can,” he said. Most families who were affected by flash floods two months ago and street children in Narok town also received lunch and refreshments. William Mwaura from CREW said they chose to celebrate with the less fortunate because they too deserved a decent life like any other person.
“Every person received a package with sugar, rice, maize flour, bar soap, tea leaves, and beans. Though this may not sustain them for many days, it will put a smile on their faces for some days, and they will remember that there are people out there who care for their lives,” he said.
Kiambu County has begun the second phase of its Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) infrastructure overhaul, with the construction of 130 new model centres slated for the 2024–2025 financial year. These centres are expected to benefit over 35,000 children currently enrolled in ECDE programs across the county. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi stated that the project aims to create an environment that excites learners and develops a love for education. The ECDE centres will be well-equipped with modern facilities to promote child development, including PP1 and PP2 classrooms, administrative offices, ablution blocks for children and teachers, and a play centre. The project builds on the success of the first phase, which saw the construction and refurbishment of 134 ECDE centres across Kiambu. The project is expected to take three financial years to complete in all 524 ECDE centres in the county.
