First-year students at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology follow the inaugural address by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Emily Akuno. She advised students to focus on their studies to build their potential and shun gambling habits, which have affected the studies of many students. “I know that as youthful students, the urge to engage in gambling to have more money for a high-level lifestyle might tempt you into gambling. Do not be lured into gambling using resources meant for fees and accommodation,” said Akuno.
The government, in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), has launched a food security and resilience project in drought- and disaster-prone areas of Garissa County. The project aims to identify women and youth groups to provide self-sufficiency and food production tips. It also aims to counter conflicts over grazing and water rights and complement similar initiatives by the World Bank. The project includes stakeholders under the State Department of Crops Development and Agricultural Research and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
Mitigation measures include regular inspections of wildlife and livestock disease outbreaks. Ijara Deputy County Commissioner Wachira Champon has called on non-governmental organisations and development partners to share their work plans with local steering groups to avoid duplication of roles.
There was jubilation in Zabka, Kimorori Wempa ward, Maragua constituency as the groundbreaking for the establishment of the new Karugu Primary School. The 7-acre site, donated by the county government, will be operational in January. The school will offload the large student population at nearby Peter Kariuki Primary School, which has around 2000 learners. The school’s foundation package includes four classrooms, an administration block, and modern ablution blocks for learners and teachers. The school will start with the lower classes of PP1, PP2, grades one, two, and three. The school is expected to bring a new secondary school to promote continued studies in close proximity. The initiative is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable education standards for all Kenyan children.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and Tsavo Trust Chief Executive Officer Richard Miller sign a working partnership to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in Tsavo East National Park. The partnership involves the joint implementation of projects to keep animals away from human settlements, including electric fence installation, water provision, health facilities, community education, and environmental conservation. Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. aims to find a permanent solution to the issue of wild animals, particularly elephants, straying into people’s homes and farmlands, causing crop destruction and sometimes deaths. He expressed optimism that the conflict could be managed to become a key economic pillar through tourism development in the area.
Kieni constituency philanthropist John Kariuki alias Choromai (right in the picture) has called on Kenyans to prepare for planting trees during the short rains, in few weeks time. He said that by planting trees, they will be addressing the global warming phenomenon that the Kenya Kwanza administration is trying to address through planting about 15 billion trees in the next few years. Choromai made the appeal and further asked citizens to pray for the government to fulfil its pledges during Sunday services where he joined faithful at Maria Consolata Catholic Church at Mweiga Expages, Kiawara Christian Outreach Worldwide Church and Njogu-ini AIPCA Kamiruri.
