Institute Director KARLO HRI Dr. Joseph Njuguna has underscored the need for proper post-harvest handling to enhance food security and improve farmers’ earnings. Dr. Njuguna pointed out that one of the biggest challenges in horticulture farming is the perishability of the produce. He said by adopting preservation methods like zero-energy cooling and drying, farmers can significantly cut post-harvest losses to increase the profitability of their produce. Dr. Njuguna also encouraged farmers to take advantage of the Horticulture Research Institute’s free training sessions on post-harvest management and value addition. He underscored the Mukulima open week, saying the event is designed to educate and empower farmers by showcasing cutting-edge innovations and technologies in the horticultural sector.

MPESA At 18: Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe on Friday joined the M-PESA at 18 celebration at Safaricom headquarters. As ICT Minister between 2005 and 2007, Kagwe played a pivotal role in Kenya’s digital transformation, leading the shift from satellite technology to fiber optic connectivity. It was during his tenure that M-PESA was founded, laying the foundation for Kenya’s leadership in mobile financial services. Today, MPESA has revolutionized agriculture by providing farmers with seamless access to financial services digitally. From E-subsidy fertilizer payments and NCPB transactions to Livestock Insurance, Restocking programs, and daily farmer transactions, it has been a true game-changer.

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni on Friday visited the Pearson VUE NCLEX examination center to explore ways of making the exam more accessible and affordable for Kenyan nurses. Through the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) and the Nursing Council of Kenya, the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards has partnered with Pearson VUE to strengthen nurses’ preparation for the exam, a critical step toward securing international employment. To further support candidates, KMTC provides a comprehensive NCLEX preparatory course, equipping nurses with the skills and confidence needed to excel. She was accompanied by KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch and Nursing Council of Kenya CEO Dr. Lister Onsongo.
