Mount Kenya University (MKU) has sent its sixth cohort of 21 nursing apprentices to Germany under a partnership with Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences.
The trainees are scheduled to travel to Germany on September 28, 2026, to begin their Nursing Apprenticeship Programme, which combines practical nursing experience, German language training and integration into the country’s healthcare workforce.
Speaking during a send-off ceremony at the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre in Thika, MKU Council Chairman and Pro-Chancellor Dr Vincent Gaitho urged young people to seize available employment opportunities while using their skills to create their own jobs.
Gaitho said the large number of graduates entering the labour market each year requires young people to be flexible in taking up available work and developing enterprises. He also called on the national and county governments to expand employment opportunities and urged banks to provide affordable financing for youth businesses.
MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said the latest group brings to 105 the number of nurses deployed to Germany through the university’s specialised programme.
He urged the trainees to observe discipline, respect German laws and culture, and uphold the reputation of their profession, university and country.
Jaganyi said international partnerships were helping MKU create pathways for graduates to gain global experience and contribute to Kenya’s healthcare system upon returning home.
