Nyahururu Prison Releases 30 Inmates In A Bid To Decongest The Facility

In a significant step towards decongesting prisons, the State Department for Correctional Services has released 30 inmates from Nyahururu main prison to engage in community service projects.
The initiative is part of a larger plan to release a total of 132 inmates to support Laikipia County’s development efforts through activities like tree planting and cleaning public spaces.
Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco underscored the importance of collaboration with county governments.
“By assigning inmates to work in schools and hospitals, we not only reduce prison numbers but also provide valuable services to the community. This is a routine effort that not only benefits the inmates but also vindicates victims and enhances community development,” Dr. Beacco stated.
During her visit to Laikipia County, she also discussed plans to inspect prison infrastructure and explore partnerships in agriculture, sanitation, and water management, ensuring that prison lands are properly secured for future generations.
