Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament, Zaheer Jhanda, has accused certain Kisii leaders affiliated with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya of organizing protests in Kisii and ferrying individuals from neighboring counties to participate in the ongoing demonstrations.
The protests were triggered by the public’s discontent over the high increase in taxation and the soaring cost of living, prompting the government to take action to address the situation.
Addressing the press, Jhanda revealed that he and the police worked together to thwart the plans of these alleged “goons” and prevent them from causing destruction in the county.
“We knew their plan, I thank the security officers for being vigilant ,”he said.
He asserted that such individuals will not be allowed to participate in future protests in the region, and if they attempt to do so, they will be arrested.
Jhanda acknowledged the constitutional right to protest and picket but criticized the protesters for turning violent and causing damage to properties.
He emphasized that violence would not solve the underlying issue of the high cost of living and that the government is committed to maintaining law and order and protecting its citizens.
In response to opposition leaders, particularly Raila Odinga and Azimio leaders, announcing three consecutive days of demonstrations (Wednesday to Friday), Jhanda called for their arrest and prosecution, holding them responsible for the loss of lives and destruction of property.
He condemned their tactics and claimed that their actions were detrimental to the country’s economy.
Jhanda emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and lawful protests, but he strongly opposed the involvement of violent elements and individuals from outside the region, emphasizing the need to address the core issues through constructive means.
