At least Sh8 billion is needed to adequately address drought menace in Nyeri County.
The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that the amount is required for procurement of various relief supplies for both the affected residents and their livestock.
The County Drought Coordinator Lordman Lekalkuli said the funds will be enough to ensure there is substantial relief food for over 200,000 residents facing starvation, enough fodder for animals and adequate chemicals to spray armyworms which are attacking the young crops among many other interventions.
He said despite the ongoing unexpected rains in the county, some parts mostly in Kieni East, Kieni West, Mathira East, Mathira West and some parts of Mukurweini are still facing starvation as the rains received in not yet adequate.
Reports show that the expected long rains at the end of March, April and May may be minimal and thus there is a need to be fully prepared.
“Armyworms have proven to be a new challenge in Kieni West and Kieni East sub counties. They are spreading very fast consuming the green young plants. Over 2,000 acres of land have been affected,” noted Lekalkuli.
He said the NDMA has joined hands with the Department of Agriculture in Nyeri for interventions mostly in spraying of armyworms.
