Opposition leaders tour Kitui, intensify criticism of Ruto administration and vows to remain united

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua led a coalition of opposition figures under the United Alternative Government on a grassroots tour in Kitui County, engaging residents in Katutu, Tulia Market, and Migwani. The delegation used the forums to sharply criticise President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of worsening the cost of living and straining public services.

Gachagua, now leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), strongly faulted the government’s health reforms, particularly the transition to the Social Health Authority (SHA), claiming teachers still face barriers accessing medical care. He also criticised Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, alleging misrepresentation of the situation on the ground.

On governance, he raised allegations of land grabbing involving figures he linked to government. He also repeated claims of attempts to privatise strategic assets like Safaricom.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka backed calls for nationwide demonstrations over economic hardship, while other leaders including Eugene Wamalwa and Justin Muturi joined the tour.

The opposition framed the engagement as part of a broader “Meet the People” campaign ahead of the 2027 elections, while the government maintained that its reforms are necessary for long-term stability and improved service delivery.
