Othaya National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) has sponsored a ten-day training of 30 coaches and 40 referees.
Area MP Wambugu Wainaina who is the patron of the CDF kitty said that the team approached him due to shortage of coaches and referees in the constituency.
“The team will now help promote football sport in the area. There has been a shortage of this sports staff which will now be solved,” said the MP during their graduation ceremony at the NG-CDF offices in Othaya town.
This is the first ever training of its kind in the area.
The team which was trained by FIFA through the Football Federation of Kenya (FFK) Nyeri branch also went home with certificates.
The male and female staff will also be involved in learning institution’s sporting and trainings.
Wainaina said the training will be done regularly in order to ensure the improvement of the sports in Othaya.
Tabitha Njoroge, who is an instructor based in Nairobi and who was the trainers head encouraged women and youths to venture into this career as it is a job like any other. Out of the 40 referees trained, 5 were women.
She said this is the latest team of referees to be trained on the new rules of 2023/2024 rules.
Nyeri branch FFK Chairman Chrispin Ochieng lauded the MP for the initiative saying the youth will now be busy in the field and shun drugs as they are busy in sport activities.
A beneficiary Joseph Macharia thanked the MP for the training saying it will be of much help in his work.
“This is a great milestone and an eye-opener to us the youth. We will be self-reliant and be able to nurture football as a sport,” Macharia said.
Several leaders led by the constituency CDF chairman Gachihi Ngugi graced the colourful ceremony.
