Othaya MP Wambugu Wainaina meets unemployed teachers

Othaya MP addressing unemployed teachers yesterday

By Our Reporter

Othaya constituency Member of Parliament Michael Wambugu Wainaina alias Mt Kenya yesterday held a consultative meeting with teachers seeking employment with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The meeting held at the constituency NG-CDF Hall in Othaya town saw the teachers raise several issues which they asked the law maker to raise up with the relevant authorities.

More than 300 teachers trained to aid learners in both primary and secondary schools accused TSC of haphazardly carrying out the recruitment exercise, an issue that sees old graduates left out at the expense of fresh graduates.

They called on TSC to come up with a clear policy where the recruitment is carried on basis of when one left the college to weed out corruption during the exercise.

The teachers also called on TSC to do away with recruitment based on whether graduates have undergone internship or not saying the condition of having been under the required three months internship was discriminatory since not all were able to secure them.

Saying that those employed by various Schools Board of Management received peanuts, the teachers called on the MP to look for ways of lobbying to have those under such scheme get more from either the TSC or through the NG-CDF funds.

Further,  some teachers said the government should issue directives to the effect that recruitment should not be localised but one should be allowed to seek employment anywhere.

The MP who attentively listened to the issues promised to raise the issues with the concerned authorities.

Saying that the forthcoming recruitment exercise will not  absorbe all those seeking recruitment,  the MP told them to broaden their minds and accept to take other available jobs.

He said due to scarcity of jobs, most Kenyans were not earning a living through the formal trainings that they underwent.

The MP said his office will create a databank for them so that when opportunities rise, they can easily contact them.

Most of the lawmakers have this week been convening such forums.
