Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris visited elderly residents at Mji wa Huruma Old People’s Home and children at multiple care centres across the city on Good Friday and through the Easter weekend, distributing food, supplies, and words of encouragement to some of the capital’s most vulnerable residents.

The visits, which spanned several constituencies, marked what has become a pattern of seasonal community outreach for Passaris, whose office confirmed stops at Nyumbani Children’s Home, Neemaland Queens and Kings Centre and Mary Faith Children Centre in Dagoretti South, and Little Lions Junior School in Kibra — constituencies that fall outside her own but within the broader Nairobi county she represents in the National Assembly.

At Mji wa Huruma, where many residents grapple with social isolation and limited access to basic necessities, Passaris spent time seated with the elderly, sharing meals and listening — a gesture that staff at the home said was as meaningful as the material support she brought. “This Good Friday, let us pause and remember our seniors,” she told those gathered. “Easter is a time for reflection, gratitude, and service.”

The sentiment echoed across each subsequent stop. At Nyumbani Children’s Home, a facility that has for decades provided shelter to children orphaned or affected by HIV and AIDS, the legislator joined in recreational activities before addressing the children directly. At Little Lions Junior School in Kibra — one of Nairobi’s most densely populated informal settlements — her arrival drew a crowd of pupils and parents who, according to school administrators, rarely receive visits from elected officials outside election cycles.

Community welfare advocates have long argued that symbolic gestures must be backed by legislative commitment, and Passaris, who chairs the National Assembly’s committee on social welfare, has in recent sessions pushed for increased budgetary allocations to children’s homes and care facilities for the elderly. Whether this Easter’s outreach translates into sustained policy advocacy will be the measure by which many will judge its lasting value.

“May this season bring light, healing, and brighter days ahead for every child and every family,” she said.

For now, those who received her this Easter are counting the visit among the few occasions someone in power chose to show up — not for a camera, but for them.
