Pathways Policy Institute (PPI) Enlightening Communities On Prudent Public Resources Checking System

A community-based organisation is seeking to enlighten Kenyans on various ways of ensuring public resources are utilized as planned.
Pathways Policy Institute (PPI) has been training community leaders on how best to tell whether funds allocated to various projects are misappropriated or not.
The organization has been holding forums to sensitize the public on how best to detect misuse of resources in different places across the country.
“Accountability is not only about knowing how much is allocated at any one time but more of ensuring that disbursement was timely, expenditures were in line with budgetted figures and eventually that there was transparency in utilization of the funds. This is what citizens want,” observed Peter Ngure, the PPI founder during such a forum in Laikipia County.
PPI is a policy and accountability community-based think tank which works under the theme, ‘Meaningfully Engaging Communities (MEC)’ with more emphasis on Population, Health and Environment (PHEs) and as well as on Climate Justice. Pathways aims to realise local solutions to Universal Health Coverage and the ongoing crisis of Global Warming through a Primary Health Care (PHC) outlook.

Already, there exists the Access to Information Act whose purpose is to enhance the accountability and transparency of Public institutions in order to promote an open and democratic society and to enable public debate on the conduct of those institutions.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya and other African countries received huge amounts of donor funding as facilitation to respond to the crisis, of which, some were not utilized as intended, leading to public outcry.
PPI was founded in 2019 with the aim of creating a safe space for advocacy and communities to get a meaningful influence on Primary Health Care, Sexual Reproductive Health and Environmental Policies through research, training and capacity building.
The organization has so far trained and capacity-built more than 50 CSOs in their advocacy work on county budgets.
