Hundreds of families from disadvantaged backgrounds in Othaya constituency have every reason to smile, courtesy of a housing programme initiated by area Member of Parliament, Wambugu Wainaina.
Under the programme, dubbed Tuinuane, at least 2,000 families are expected to benefit from the housing scheme that is targeting those living in mud or in dilapidated timber houses.
The idea, a brainchild of the Kenya Kwanza first time lawmaker has loped in otherΒ well-wishers who are now contributing to make the MP’s dream of providing decent houses to his constituents a reality.
So far, already 70 families have had their homesteads changed with hundreds of others being lined up for the face-lift.

In an interview, the MP said he had mobilized a number of Othaya-born people who live outside the constituency to support the initiative which he disclosed has targeted 2,000 families by the end of next year.
He said by building new houses, the affected families will be able to concentrate on other matters of raising their standards of living.
He noted that with dilapidated houses, most of the families were prone to jigger infestation which made their input to various daily activities low, thereby dipping them further into poverty.
A member of the Tuinuane initiative, Samuel Mugendi said the initiative was among other things expected to raise the expectations affected families children and enable them concentrate well with their studies.
A beneficiary couple, Nderitu Karimi and Mercy Muthoni thanked the MP and his initiative members for assisting them get a decent house.
Karimi, a father of 5 said he had hoped to built a new house once he was through with educating his children, something which was to take several years to be realized.
While thanking the MP and his team, his wife said she was very ashamed of the housing condition that she was living but had no alternative.
Another beneficiary Teresa Wangari was all thankful saying though she had a tree, making timber out of it was out of this world due to limited resources.
The MP said the initiative would also be providing water tanks to the beneficiaries do that they can harvest water and cut journey to the rivers.
Various leaders in and out of Othaya have lauded the initiative saying it is a unique way of honouring the less privileged in the society.
