Two men who lost their lives during the tragic shooting at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium have been identified by human rights group Vocal Africa, following the circulation of harrowing images showing bodies sprawled inside the venue. The incident occurred during the public viewing of the late Raila Odinga’s body, drawing thousands of mourners.
In a statement released Friday, Vocal Africa’s Executive Director Hussein Khalid confirmed the identity of one of the victims as Evans Onyango Kiche, a 40-year-old father of three. “We are currently at the City Mortuary and have verified that the body found at Kasarani belongs to Evans Onyango Kiche,” Khalid said. “He was a devoted husband and father. We’ve met with his family and are supporting them through the legal process.”
Khalid also revealed that three bodies from the stadium shooting had been received at the mortuary, with investigations underway to determine if more casualties were taken to other facilities.
The second confirmed victim was Vincent Otieno Ogutu. His father, Mzee Meshack Okode, was overcome with grief upon identifying his son’s body. Ogutu, also a father of three, was reportedly shot while attending the viewing ceremony. Vocal Africa shared a video showing Mzee Okode inside a police vehicle, visibly distraught as he sat beside his son’s remains.
The violence erupted Thursday afternoon when mourners surged toward the VIP section where Odinga’s body lay in state. Eyewitnesses reported that police responded with live ammunition and tear gas after some individuals attempted to breach security barriers, sparking chaos and a deadly stampede.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The public viewing had been moved from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani Stadium to accommodate the massive turnout, following earlier disruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport when Odinga’s body arrived from India.
