Sammy Kamau sworn in as Ol Kalou MP after landslide by-election victory

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) legislator Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau was yesterday officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency, formally taking up the seat he won in the July 16 parliamentary by-election.
Kamau took the Oath of Office in the National Assembly Chamber before signing the official Oath Register, marking the beginning of his tenure in the House.
He was escorted during the ceremony by Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia and Roysambu MP Augustine Kamande Mwafrika.
His swearing-in comes nearly two weeks after he secured a decisive victory in the closely watched by-election, which was widely viewed as a key political contest in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kamau, who contested on a DCP ticket, garnered 35,440 votes to defeat his closest challenger, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who polled 5,450 votes. Jubilee Party’s Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa finished a distant third with 198 votes, while six other candidates shared the remaining votes.
The by-election recorded a voter turnout of about 57 per cent, with 41,656 ballots cast out of 73,480 registered voters.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of three-term MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March this year after a short illness.
Kamau will now serve the remainder of the 13th Parliament until the next General Election scheduled for August 2027.
A native of Ol Kalou in Nyandarua County, the new MP attended AC Primary School in the Karau/Kaimbaga area before joining Utumishi Boys High School.
He later graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics.
His political career began in 2013 when he was elected the inaugural Member of County Assembly for Karau Ward on a TNA ticket.
Before his election to Parliament, he served as the Democracy for Citizens Party coordinator for Nyandarua County, where he spearheaded grassroots mobilisation and party recruitment.
Kamau’s victory was seen as a major boost for the DCP, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with political analysts interpreting the outcome as an indicator of the shifting political landscape in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
The contest attracted national attention, pitting the opposition-backed DCP against President William Ruto’s UDA in one of the year’s most keenly contested by-elections.
As he assumes office, Kamau is expected to represent the people of Ol Kalou in the National Assembly for the remaining period of the current parliamentary term while pursuing the constituency’s development agenda and fulfilling the legislative, oversight and representation roles of the office.
Among the leaders who were first to congratulate him was his party leader Rigathi Gachagua, fellow MPs and his constituents.
