A section of MCAs drawn from Mount Kenya region, Nairobi and parts of Eastern region have pledged to rally behind Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their link to the national government.
The ward representatives from Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Isiolo, Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties said Kindiki is the Cabinet Secretary mandated to oversee and coordinate national development and they are optimistic he will assist them with development at the grassroots level.
In a press briefing following a closed door meeting at a Murang’a hotel on Wednesday, the MCAs noted the CS will be their focal point and link to the national government on matters of their welfare, leadership and their region’s development.
“Proper coordination with the national government will help supplement the input of county governments and accelerate development in the next three years of President William Ruto’s first term in office.” Said Njinaro Njamumo, deputy speaker of the county assembly of Kirinyaga.
The MCAs declaration comes barely a week after a section of MPs from the region threw their support behind Kindiki in a meeting that was held in Nyandarua county.
“We have noted and appreciated the proposal by Members of Parliament from the Mt. Kenya region on the need to front a united and coordinated push for development.
“We have confidence in Prof. Kindiki’s competence, experience and capacity to advance our region’s development needs together with the interests of all the other regions, resulting in a country that develops as a whole, for the prosperity and benefit of all our citizens,” added the Deputy Speaker who read the press statement.
As MCAs elected on UDA ticket from the Mt. Kenya region, Njamumo said they support the president in his pursuit for equitable development of the country, and improving the livelihoods of the Kenyan people.
“As the President deploys mechanisms to fast-track completion of the stalled development projects and initiation of new ones, we urge all our leaders to champion for development in our region in a manner that preserves national unity,” he further noted.
The Mutithi ward MCA continued “We believe in the unity and indivisibility of our nation. Kenya can only succeed as a whole and any attempt to divide our country along ethnic and parochial lines is backward, irresponsible and unhelpful.”
On his part, the Speaker of the County Assembly of Isiolo, Mohammed Roba reiterated that as leaders of Isiolo, they have decided to be part of Mt. Kenya and support Kindiki as their link man to the national government.
Roba expressed confidence that with Kindiki, Isiolo will get more developments especially with completion of stalled projects.
“We made the decision to work with leaders of this region as we spearhead national unity. Our mandate is to ensure developments get at grassroots considering the Kenya Kwanza’a Bottom-Up development agenda.
“Settling on the Interior CS as our point man does not mean we side line other leaders but his ministry has the responsibility to coordinate all national government’s projects.” Added Roba.
Nyeri’s Chinga Ward MCA Kiruka Thuku highlighted that in the meeting they also agreed ward representatives to be fully involved in matters concerning development.
He noted that as MCAs they are leaders at grassroots who frequently interact with residents and know their challenges facing their electorate.
“We have come out with a raft of recommendations touching developments at grassroots and our request is to the president, the CS for Interior and other senior leaders to assist MCAs to deliver developments to our people at grassroots areas,” he remarked.
However, some of present MCAs called for inclusivity of all leaders saying calls for development should not be used as a way to sideline key figures in the government.
