Tharaka Nithi First Lady, Margaret Muthomi Champions Technical Skills and Education Empowerment

Technical skills remain a cornerstone of economic growth and self-reliance, providing individuals with direct pathways to employment and entrepreneurship.
Recognizing this, Tharaka Nithi County First Lady, Margaret Muthomi, through her Jiinue Initiative, equipped Marimanti Vocational Training Centre with modern sewing machines and provided dignity kits and other essential items to learners.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Muthomi emphasized the importance of vocational training in fostering self-sufficiency among the youth.
“Technical skills are the backbone of economic empowerment. I urge our young people to embrace vocational training, as job opportunities in formal employment are increasingly scarce,” she said.
She said the government has given a lot of focus to skills courses because it is the only solution to the growing unemployment, especially among young people in the country.
She added that with skills, youths will not be frustrated and result to alcoholism and drug use which have ruined many.
The County’s Education Chief Officer, Mwiti Mono, lauded the initiative, noting that the new equipment would significantly enhance training at the institution.
He highlighted the tremendous growth of vocational training under Governor Muthomi Njuki’s leadership, stating that the number of training centers in Tharaka constituency had expanded from two in 2017 to five.
“Governor Njuki has prioritized vocational education, and we are happy to see the First Lady complementing these efforts. Recently, the county advertised vacancies for vocational instructors, and they will soon be absorbed into the system to further strengthen training programs,” Mono stated.
Later in the day, the First Lady visited Kiarithaa Secondary School in Igambang’ombe Ward, where she donated a water harvesting tank and sports equipment.
She asked the school management to embrace water harvesting noting that the water which goes into waste during rainy season can sustain the school and avoid the challenge during dry season.
“With the water tanks, the school should not struggle even during dry season. We need to embrace water harvesting,” she said.
She encouraged students to focus on both academics and extracurricular activities noting that even the later pays well if perfected.
“Education is key, but we must also nurture our talents in sports and other co-curricular activities,” Mrs. Muthomi urged.
Her visit underscored the county government’s commitment to education and skills development as vital pillars for sustainable economic empowerment.
Through the Jiinue Initiative, the First Lady has supported hundreds of youths in secondary and vocational schools with training equipment, books, balls and dignity kits.
The initiative is not founded by the county government but personal donations and from her friends who include Zetech University.
