Fatalities and injuries in Kenyan roads have gradually increased by 20.5 % for the past seven years. Kenya as a country, being ranked as a lower middle-income, has experienced an increase in road accidents because it’s a low-income economy, roads and infrastructural development is still lagging behind. The high state of poor roads in Kenya is strongly evident by the residents in Homa Bay county who have oftenly decried over the poor road leading to the factory situated in Riat Ndhiwa sub- county, which have claimed several lives.
Roads that are in sorry states are absolutely the root cause of the road fatalities. This happens despite the fact that politicians yearly set empty promises for the improvement of the Kenyan roads, which are barely fulfilled. The rate of road fatalities in Kenya totally requires a serious concern of the government. For the past one week a good number of people have perished in road accidents; June 7 six died after a bus collides with a saloon car along Thika-Garissa highway, this is just after an accident occurred at the same spot just two days before, which left 12 dead.
It’s high time the government should come in and intervene to save the Kenyan lives before it’s late, improve road transport, set additional safety measures that will necessarily protect road users. The government in addition should compose a commission that will assist in offering mass education to citizens on the correct ways of road use, ways to prevent occurrence of road accidents as well. Since it’s an electioneering period, reducing road fatalities at this juncture will impactfully save more votes for the political aspirants.
