Top Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) pupils from Murang’a County got an opportunity of their lifetime when they toured Parliament to familiarize themselves with the operations of both Houses.
The 150 pupils who topped in their respective schools in the last year’s KCPE examination results accompanied by their teachers and parents, visited the National Assembly and Senate Chambers yesterday courtesy of Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata.
Pupils, teachers and their parents could not hide their joy as they got the rare opportunity to have a feel of the environment where the people’s representatives transact their business, even as they took turns to warm the later’s seats in both Houses.
They took memorable pictures with a host of MPs and Senior Parliamentary staff during the educational tour.
They were also shown around the Legislature by staff from the Public Communications department.
Upon arrival in Parliament, the delegation led by the Governor was received by Murang’a Senator, Joseph Nyutu and nominated Senator Veronica Maina. Both lawmakers congratulated the pupils for their sterling performance and encouraged them to work harder when they transition to high school.
“I take this opportunity to thank your Governor for facilitating this trip. To the pupils, I hope after leaving here you will be motivated to continue working hard when you join high school,” urged Sen. Maina.
Sen. Nyutu said he was proud to be associated with the top students from his county and took his time to educate them on operations of the Senate.
Governor Kang’ata said the trip was meant to honour the top students and motivate them to work extra hard in their academic journey ahead.
He added that he has planned for a tour of all top pupils from all the nine regions in the county.
“This is the first group of pupils who topped schools in the county and they are drawn from Kandara and Maragwa Sub Counties. The rest will be visiting Parliament this week, ” said the former Murang’a Senator.
The Governor thanked the Management of Parliament led by Speakers of both Houses and the staff for facilitating the delegation’s visit yo the August House, adding that it was a great honour for him and the visitors.
