Transition Of Amboseli National Park To Kajiado County Government Unveiled

Supported by critical stakeholders in the tourism industry, The Amboseli National Park Transition Strategic Plan has been launched, marking a significant shift in the management and vision for one of kenya’s premier wildlife destinations.

The event, held in Nairobi, was a collaborative effort by the County Government of Kajiado, the Ministry of Tourism, and various stakeholders.

The strategic plan, which spans from 2024 to 2026, outlines a comprehensive roadmap for transforming Amboseli National Park into a “third generation park.” This concept aims to integrate modern management practices, sustainable tourism, and community involvement to ensure the park’s long-term viability and prosperity.

Key objectives of the Strategic Plan, undertaken under sustainable management include implementing practices that balance wildlife conservation with the needs of local communities and tourism development.

Community Involvement includes ensuring that local communities benefit from tourism revenues and are actively involved in conservation efforts and goodwill is of paramount importance.

So far, a million acre of land already has been offered by 11 group ranches in the ecosystem.

The plan also involves Introducing new tourism products and services to enhance visitor experiences while maintaining the park’s ecological integrity.

Further, the plan will involve infrastructure development that will carry upgrading park facilities and infrastructure to support increased tourism and improve operational efficiency.

Kajiado County Governor Joseph Ole Lenku ,  emphasized the importance of this transition, stating, “This strategic plan represents a new era for Amboseli National Park. By placing management in the hands of the local government, we aim to create a model of conservation that benefits both wildlife and our communities. Our vision is to make Amboseli a world-class destination while preserving its unique ecological and cultural heritage,” he stated.

The governor further highlighted the collaborative efforts behind the plan, noting, “The transition of Amboseli National Park to the County Government of Kajiado is a testament to our commitment to devolve resources and responsibilities. This partnership will harness local expertise and ensure that conservation and tourism development are driven by those who are closest to the park,” he remarked

Tourism stakeholders, including representatives from the private sector and conservation organizations, expressed their support for the strategic plan.

They highlighted the potential for increased investment and tourism growth, which could bring significant economic benefits to the region.

The launch of the Amboseli National Park Transition Strategic Plan sets a precedent for other regions in Kenya, demonstrating the potential of devolved management to enhance conservation efforts and promote sustainable development.

As Amboseli embarks on this new chapter, the commitment to preserving its natural beauty and ensuring its prosperity for future generations remains at the forefront of this visionary strategy.
