The arrest of Trans Nzoia County Assembly Deputy Speaker and Matisi Ward Member of County Assembly Obed Mwale has sent shockwaves through opposition circles, with the Linda Mwananchi movement demanding his immediate release and denouncing the detention as politically motivated.
Mwale was picked up by armed police officers in Kitale on Monday and transferred to Kapenguria Police Station in neighbouring West Pokot County. He faces allegations of financing criminal activities, organising gangs and involvement in a reported plot to obstruct President William Ruto’s motorcade during his visit to Kitale on October 16. None of the allegations have been established in court.
The movement’s Head of Communication, Pauline Njoroge, was swift and direct in her condemnation. In a statement issued yesterday, Njoroge dismissed the charges as a deliberate attempt to silence Mwale because of his political activities and his close association with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. She insisted the arrest was part of a broader and troubling pattern of intimidation targeting Linda Mwananchi leaders and supporters across Trans Nzoia County.
“This arrest is nothing but political persecution,” Njoroge said. “Obed Mwale is being targeted because he dares to speak truth to power.”
Natembeya himself confirmed that Mwale was being held at Kapenguria Police Station ahead of a court appearance, linking the accusations directly to the tensions surrounding the October 16 motorcade incident β an episode that had already inflamed political tempers in the region, with leaders from rival camps trading accusations.
Mwale appeared before the Kapenguria Law Courts yesterday morning, though details of the proceedings were not immediately available at the time of going to press. Linda Mwananchi announced that a team of volunteer lawyers had stepped forward to represent him, underscoring the movement’s commitment to seeing him through the legal process.
The timing of the arrest is not lost on political observers. Mwale has been openly positioning himself for the Trans Nzoia Senate seat in the 2027 General Election, where he is widely expected to challenge incumbent Senator Allan Chesang. His arrest arrives at a moment when political activity across the country is intensifying sharply ahead of next year’s polls.
Linda Mwananchi has made clear it will not be deterred. The movement insists that political disagreements cannot be used to strip leaders of their constitutional rights, and has vowed to press on with its activities regardless of the pressure it says it is facing.
Whether the charges against Mwale hold up in court remains to be seen. But with 2027 drawing closer, the case has already become a flashpoint in a county β and a country β where the line between law enforcement and political rivalry grows harder to read with each passing week.
