What Is Endometriosis (Chocolate Cyst)?

Endometriosis gets its name from the word “endometrium,” which is the lining of the uterus that thickens and sheds every month during menstruation. The endometrium layer, which should normally be in the inner layer of the uterus, is also present outside the uterus in endometriosis. This endometriosis outside the uterus can cause pain and infertility (infertility).

The endometrium, which covers the uterus, also responds to the hormones that control the menstrual cycle. As during menstruation in the uterus, thickening and bleeding occur in these places. But the blood that appears here cannot be removed from the body, and it accumulates and forms chocolate cysts. Over time, the effects of bleeding can lead to adhesions and damage to other organs.

What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?

The most common symptoms of endometriosis are pain before and during menstruation (usually more severe than pain experienced during a normal period), pain during and after sex, infertility, irregular or excessive bleeding . Other symptoms may include fatigue, back pain, diarrhea or constipation during menstruation, and other intestinal disorders. Sometimes endometriosis has no symptoms.

Causes of endometriosis?

The cause of endometriosis is not completely known. Although several causes have been proposed, none of them can explain all cases of endometriosis. Recent studies have shown that dioxins, environmental toxins that act as hormones in the body and damage the immune system, such as PCBs, have been shown to cause endometriosis. It is more common in women who eat more animal products such as red meat.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

To diagnose endometriosis, it is necessary to visit the centers of the disease and conduct a pathological examination of the sample. A laparoscopic method is used for this. Accurate diagnosis and treatment can be applied laparoscopically. If the patient complains of a chocolate cyst or if the patient has infertility problems, laparoscopy can be performed for diagnostic purposes. Before laparoscopy, vaginal ultrasound examination also helps to make a diagnosis. Large chocolate cysts can be seen using ultrasound.

How is endometriosis treated?

With laparoscopic or classical surgical operations, endometriosis lesions can be removed or eliminated, and symptoms can be relieved or pregnancy can be promoted. However, as with other treatments, recurrence is common.
