What role do they play to the people? Government manages the welfare of the people. The countries resources are in the custodian and caretaker of the government. On the other hand, opposition acts as a watchdog over those with the custodian of the people’s welfare.
Government and opposition are in competition to offer best services to the people, so the opposition offers alternative better governance policy suggestion against those offered by the ruling government. If the opposition outwit the people sitting in government with better governance policy, then there is possibility of opposition being in government and government being in opposition, what it can’t happen is the change of guard or commander in chief.
The research should be on, how opposition governance policies can be incorporated in the ruling government policies to improve general good governance of the people’s welfare, against tradition perception role of opposition where it is perceived as opposing government bills in floor of the house and organising public rallies across the country castigating the government of day, every now and then.
The research should base on, how the office of the opposition can be strengthened to enable it offer alternative government policies, rather than being noisemakers inside and outside Parliament. The research should also base on how political parties can be strengthened, formed on bases of political ideologies against current trend of formation of political parties based on tribal basis and region background.
Political parties in Africa are properties of specific people and are not public owned entity political parties, thus why in Africa no political party outlives the owners. Once the owners have achieved their political goals they are immediately disbanded and new political parties formed.
