Central Region Economic Bloc To Push For Inclusion Of Key Local Crops in National Gov’t Value Chain Priority

- The summit convened at the Lake Naivasha Resort in Naivasha and which was chaired by Nyeri Governor Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga had brought together its partners, stakeholders and the County Executive Committee Members of Health and Finance from the various Counties in the CEREB region.
- The counties forming the caucus include Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nakuru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru and Laikipia.
- “I took the opportunity to appreciate the partners for their support and the resource mobilisation they have done across the counties in a bid to Propel CEREB economically to becoming a self sustaining region,” Kahiga posted on his Facebook page after the meeting.
Mount Kenya regional development caucus has taken issue with the National government’s failure to list key cash crops grown in the area in its value chain priorities.
The caucus; Central Region Economic Bloc (CEREB) that says that under the new government plans on value chain, crops that area farmers rely on have not been included.
This issue informed the 10 counties that comprise CEREB to hold a consultative meeting yesterday where they resolved to push for their inclusion.
After the meeting, the officials issued a communique where they stated their resolution to engage the national government in having the matter resolved.
These crops are; coffee, avocado, pyrethrum, banana, macadamia, potatoes, maize and wheat
They noted that the above were missing in the priority list despite the fact that Kenya is the largest producer of avocado and pyrethrum in Africa. The country is the third largest producer of macadamia in the world and is the fifth largest producer of coffee in Africa
Further, they observed, the country is the sixth largest producer of potatoes in Africa.
A few months after coming to power, the Kenya Kwanza administration disclosed the nine value chain products and produce that it will give priority in terms of financing
These are leather and Leather products, livestock value chain which include dairy and pastoral economy and edible oils which comprises of soya beans, sunflower, canola and simsim.
Others in the list are apparel/garments/textile/cotton, construction and building materials, mining and blue economy.

During the summit, CEREB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Central Kenya Development Network (CKDN), a private group that has interest in championing the welbeing of central Kenya people
Ambassador Stephen Karau represented the organisation in signing the Mou while Kahiga did it for CEREB.
The process was witnessed by CEREB Governors present who included Muthomi Njuki (Embu), Kiarie Badilisha (Nyandarua), Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) and Reuben Kamuri who is the Deputy Governor in Laikipia County. They also signed the communique.
Also present was CEREB Chief Executive Officer Ndirangu Gachunia.
The MoU seeks to establish a framework for collaboration between CKDN and CEREB to provide technical assistance and strengthening capacity developmental interventions that enhance socio-economic growth targeting governance, health, agriculture, trade and environment climate action in Central Region.
