A wellwishers and development minded group of Nyeri business people under the name 019 Community yesterday donated foodstuffs to schools in drought striken areas of Kieni East and Kieni West Subcounties in Nyeri county.
Led by their chairman Pius Mwangi Gitahi they visited nine schools in the area.
They are Thung’are, Gatuamba, Ndiriti and GatuaNyaga primary schools in Kieni East area and Labura, Mwihoko, Kiahuko, Rurichu and Wang’ata Primary schools in Kieni West.
The schools had cases of pupils dropping out of school due to the biting drought in the area.
“With this school feeding programme it will attract the pupils back to school and ensure smooth learning” Gitahi noted.
He added that they decided to make the donations so as to ensure that the Grade 6 and Standard 8 candidates are in school during the national exams which will be done towards the end of this month.
Gitahi urged the government to bring back the school feeding programme as this will ensure learners are in school unlike the relief food which they are providing to parents and its not enough even when a child eats at home he or she has nothing to take to school for lunch which makes many pupils to stay at home while others are in school.

The head of schools in the visited schools echoed similar sentiments thanking the group for the good gesture to help keep the youngsters in schools considering national exams are around the corner.
One of them, Gacheru from Kiahuko Primary School thanked the group for the assistance, noting that the area has been without rains since january and since many parents are farmers, they were subjected to abject poverty and were unable to fed for their children.
