Internal tensions, a disputed flag bearer and restless allies threaten to fracture Kenya’s opposition before the campaign has even begun.

The Linda Mwananchi Movement faces a credibility test it cannot afford to fail. Speculation that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is being sidelined within the movement — amplified by bloggers urging him to abandon it and pursue the Nairobi governorship independently — has exposed fault lines that opposition principals have yet to address publicly. Whether those claims reflect Owino’s actual position remains unconfirmed. He has said nothing. The silence, however, is doing damage.
Political movements are not destroyed by their opponents. They collapse from within — through unresolved grievances, competing ambitions and the corrosive drip of unchallenged rumour. The Linda Mwananchi leadership owes its supporters clarity, not silence.
The question of who carries the opposition’s presidential flag in 2027 sharpens the stakes further. Edwin Sifuna, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i are all in the conversation. But the selection cannot be a backroom transaction. Kenyans are watching, and they deserve a process that is transparent, principled and rooted in a genuine national vision rather than brokered personal ambition.
Opposition unity built on shared grievance alone will not survive contact with a general election campaign. It must be anchored in policy, accountability and democratic legitimacy.
Kenya’s 2027 election will not be won in bloggers’ threads or closed-door negotiations. It will be won — or lost — by whoever earns the public’s trust first.
