NARC architect shares winning coalition strategy with former Deputy President as opposition unity drive intensifies ahead of August election

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met National Rainbow Coalition leader Charity Ngilu at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County yesterday to draw lessons from the 2002 political coalition that ended KANU’s decades-long grip on power.
Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, described Ngilu as the “Iron Lady of Kenyan politics” and said the meeting gave him renewed clarity on the path to opposition victory in August 2027. “This morning, I benefited greatly from Ngilu’s wisdom as she took me through how NARC was crafted and implemented,” he said, adding that the insights would prove instrumental in the coalition’s preparations.
Gachagua said Ngilu, together with the late President Mwai Kibaki and the late Vice-President Kijana Wamalwa, crafted the strategy that brought KANU’s era to an end in the landmark 2002 General Election. He said Kenya now faces a comparable political moment. “We have a 2002 moment, and our promise is that we shall identify one presidential candidate who will win by a landslide,” Gachagua said.
