Agriculture has been the most way in which many people feed themselves and also earn a living from it. Perhaps, it has also been depended on about 80% of the Kenyan population. As it involves farming, there are both small and large scale farmers as well. Many farmers, especially those who cultivate mainly for cash crops, have been facing difficulties in marketing and selling of their produce. Sugarcane farmers at large had been facing this problem, but yet no any reasonable solution has been taken into account. Why import sugar from other countries when you have the raw materials and resources?
The country has been importing sugar from other countries, yet there are plenty of sugarcane plantations in various geographical regions. How then will the country promote local farmers? Many farmers are now stranded as to where to sell their produce. It’s quite frustrating that despite the fact that the farmers have been wailing, nobody has taken heed to them.
To some, those whose produce have been taken into the industry have not yet received their money. Despite the strikes and demonstrations of farmers in demand for payment, still it has even become worse. This also has been contributed by the closure of some sugarcane firms.
The government should promote local farmers by ensuring that they create a marketing environment where farmers can sell their produce. It should also re-birth the local sugarcane industries which have been closed down to work. Government also should ensure that they take heed of the farmers grievances and implement possible remedies to save their worsen situations.
