Education Stakeholders in Nyeri County want CBC curriculum simplified to reduce demands on parents and junior secondary school be domiciled in primary schools considering the age of learners.
Majority of those who made presentations before the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) cited high cost of implementation, inadequate training of teachers, transition, inequality and lack of infrastructure as some of the impediments to CBC.
Speaking yesterday during the Nyeri County Education stakeholderspublic hearing forum at Nyeri High School, the stakeholders noted that CBC is a good curriculum but its implementation was rushed.
“CBC was a rushed programme which was forced on the parents and teachers, but if given time, and every stakeholder putting in their input it will be a very useful system to our students and the society in general considering that it is practical oriented and thus, can be very helpful in our society,” Executive Secretary KNUT Nyeri Mathenge Wanjau said.
He also noted that the structure and implementation of CBC should consider having teachers staffed, deployed and remunerated so as to motivate them.
He said that the CBC structure needs radical changes.
Nyeri Town Constituency MP Duncan Maina Mathenge however was against the CBC saying he has visited his 20 secondary schools in his constituency and that they are not ready to hold the junior secondary learners as there are no enough infrastructure like classrooms.
The UDA lawmaker noted that CBC is expensive to most parents as they can’t afford some of the required materials.
He accused members of the 12th parliament of failing to make laws to enable the country be ready for the CBC system.
“CBC was poorly implemented as teachers only ask for CBC materials in the evening and maybe the parent is not in a position to get them making CBC a headache to most of them.” Charles Ngatia a parent said.
He proposed that teachers should prepare workplan and share with the parents so as to prepare them on what materials to provide and when and this will ensure smooth implementation of the curriculum.
