Laikipia County to partner with Kenya Climate Innovation Centre in AgriBIiz program

The County Government of Laikipia, through the Department of Agriculture and Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) is seeking to initiate an AgriBiz programme.
Yesterday, CECM in charge of the department, Dennis Kasoo met the team from KCIC, led by the Hub manager for the Mt. Kenya Region Business Hub, Carol Weru to deliberate on how to successfully implement the initiative in the area.
The program seeks to economically empower youth and women who are in the rural and peri-urban areas, unemployed and with lack of financial resources and know how to create viable sustainable businesses.
Agri-prenuers, individual farmers, farmer groups, community-based Organizations (CBOs), and co-operatives are expected to apply for funding, business advisory and technical support in Agriculture in the area.
The CECM assured that the department will help the small scale farmers practice and look at agriculture as a business. He also proposed for a demonstration farm set-up at Kamangura where the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KSCAP) Laikipia has connected around 200 households with water.
“Let’s help our farmers practice Agriculture as a business not just as a way of life,” said Mr. Kasoo.
Ms. Weru disclosed that over 20 individual farmers will receive grants ranging from KShs. 500,000 to 1,200,000 for an individual farmer. The farmers can also apply for loans from as low as KShs. 300,000.
