NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PUBLIC PETITION COMMITTEE MEETS OVER STALLED HOUSING PROJECT

The National Assembly’s Public Petitions Committee yesterday held a meeting with citizens who have questioned the stalling of housing project in Kibera area, Nairobi County.
Committee chairman Nimrod Mbai who represents Kitui East constituency hosted the meeting where they engaged petitioners who were led by Mr. Waweru, Chairperson Ng’ando Housing Cooperation on frustrations caused by the stalled housing project in kibera.
The housing project was an initiative by the Kenya Railways with finances from the World Bank.
The project aimed to construct houses for people living along the railway line that passes through Kibera to secure a 60-meters buffer from the railway line.
The petitioners cited harassment by Kenya Railways Corporation through demand letters for the stalled houses.
“We have been receiving payment demand letters from Kenya Railways for us to pay for houses that have stalled and we don’t occupy,” said Mr. Waweru.
He sought the intervention of the Committee to ask the Government facilitate the release of funds to the Kenya Railways Cooperation to complete the project and sort their problems.
The Committee chairman appreciated efforts made by Ng’ando Housing Cooperative on the initiative to settle the displaced Kibera residents who had been affected by the demolitions along the railway line in Kibera, terming it as a great step towards improving the living conditions of the community.
The Mbai-led Committee assured the petitioner of thorough diligence and promised to engage all parties in the matter.
The Committee will write and summon the management of Kenya Railways Corporation to shed more light on the petition.
Other members present included vice-chairperson Janet Sitienei (Turbo), Patrick Makau (Mavoko), Joshua Kandie (Baringo Central), Ernest Kivai (Vihiga), Bernard Muriuki (Mbeere South) and Clement Sloya (Sabatia)
