The residents want the government to come up with a rescue centre for the vulnerable teenage mothers.

Though this call has been aired in the past, the same was repeated yesterday during a public participation on Nyeri Town constituency NG-CDF for the 2022-2023 financial year.

Speaking during the sessions in various places in the constituency and which were attended by local Fund officials as well as area Member of Parliament Duncan Maina Mathenge, the residents disclosed that there were many teenage mothers in the locality who need social support while upbringing their children.

Noting that cases of teenage Pregnancies were on the rise, the residents said most young mothers and their children suffered under the care of some of their family members and thus, a rescue centre could come in handy.

Reports show that there are increased teenage mothers in Nyeri town with some being impregnated by the family members.

At least 720 teenage pregnancies were reported in Nyeri County between January and May last year.

This is according to data released during a sensitisation exercise for over 3,000 residents comprising of community health volunteers, youth, and national government administrators.

Apart from the mothers rescue centre,  the residents called for establishment of a rehabilitation centre in the area saying drug and substance abuse was also high.

The area MP yeri Town MP noted that other projects which will be prioritised in improvement of learning institutions, improvement of security sector, improvement of sports facilities, power connection, improvement of street lights and roads are some of the projects to be factored in the current financial year.

The proposals will be delivered to the NG-CDF national board by 13th of this month so that the funds for the constituency are released.
