KEPHIS Plans To Work With CEREB And Set Up Regional Office In Nyeri

It offers four core services namely; plant health services which ensure exports and imports are free from pesticides and diseases, seed certification and plant variety modification ensuring farmers receive quality seeds, analytical role, and vital sanitary services.
The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) will collaborate with mountain region economic block to help it realize some of its objectives.
To efficiently achieve this, the parastatal will be establishing a regional office in Nyeri town as its first step.
This was disclosed yesterday when the Board of Directors and Senior Management team led by the chairman Peter Weru held a consultative meeting with Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Weru said KEPHIS is looking towards scaling up its services to the region with its base being in Nyeri.
On his part, the governor who incidentally is the chairman of Central Region Economic Bloc (CEREB) pledged to mobilize his colleagues in a bid to harness their energies toward improvement of Agricultural practices through KEPHIS.
“I welcome this partnership with KEPHIS, which is geared towards realizing food security in line with the Kenya Kwanza government agendas, to be achieved through reduction of pests and disease incidences in our crops,” the Governo observed.

According Weru, KEPHIS is also implementing deliberate measures geared towards helping the citizenry including training farmers on good agricultural practices, pest management, and seed production among others, while capacity-building farmers on agricultural produce exportation.
“I would like to thank Governor Kahiga for welcoming us to partner and set up a base in Nyeri. The expansion of our services to the CEREB will ease the control and management of transboundary pests and diseases, guaranteeing that the region is pest and disease free,” added weru.
KEPHIS has set up its operations in Nyeri at Wambugu Farm.
Also present were Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, County Secretary Ben Gachichio, Agriculture CEC James Wachihi, Public Service & Solid Waste Management CEC Ndirangu Gachunia, and KEPHIS Managing Director Prof. Theophilus Mutui among others.
