President William Ruto has said 20,000 youth will benefit from internship programmes beginning next year.
He said there was need to accord more young people the opportunity to serve the country on internship programmes.
The President urged the private sector to partner with the Government in ensuring that more young people benefitted from the programme as part of efforts to uplift their lives.
“Beginning next year, we are going to recruit 20,000 young people to serve in various sectors of our economy,” said President Ruto.
The President made the remarks on Friday, during the launch of Public Service internship programme and acknowledgement of the Public Service emerging leaders fellowship programme at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi.
3,902 interns benefitted from the programme this year.

The Head of State said the Public Service will be reformed to make it more responsive to the needs of Kenyans adding that the reforms were part of efforts to ensure the Public Service achieves the hopes, aspirations and dreams of Kenyans.
He said the strategy to transform the Public Service was centered on performance management and productivity.
“The ultimate measure of performance in the Public Service is citizen satisfaction. Accordingly, the Government will introduce a robust and integrated performance management architecture.”
The President further said the Government would also provide standardized tools for measuring service delivery across the Public Service, including State corporations and public universities.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the Government was keen to ensure a vibrant and motivated public service, saying the move was ideal for the growth of the economy.
“We are developing the public service to implement our agenda. We will create a conducive environment for public servants to deliver,” Gachagua said.
He described the ongoing Azimio’s weekly mass demonstrations as post-election violence due to destruction of lives and property.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said efficient public service remains key to the implementation of the Government’s development agenda.
Mudavadi urged the media to be fair in their reporting, noting that more focus was being given to the ongoing demonstrations, ignoring the Government’s development initiatives.
Public Service and Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa noted that Kenyans needed a public service that conforms to their aspirations.
“We are committed to ensuring that our public service conforms to the aspirations of Kenyans,” said Jumwa.
On his part, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission Amb. Antony Mucheru said civil servants should demonstrate high standards of accountability.
