Kisii County Member of Parliament Dorice Donya Aburi has urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their school ongoing children behavior as a way to curb indiscipline cases and early teen pregnancies.
Speaking at Tendere Ground, Bomachoge Chache, during donation of food stuffs and clothes to the residents, under Donya Charity Mission program, she said that parents have been tasked with the responsibility of guarding their children when they are young by safeguarding their movement and how they spend time in an effort to ensure that they engage in productive activities.
Donya said that parents and guardians can determine their children’s future character by disciplining them when they are young, keeping them occupied and knowing their company.
According to her majority of the girls drop out of school due to early teen pregnancies forcing them to be at home ruining their lives.
Donya noted that as a result of parents being absent in their children’s life, many vices such as drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and early marriages have been on the rise.
“Parents and guardians have the collective responsibility of working around the clock in order to shape your children’s character,” she said.
According to her cases of early pregnancy, HIV and AIDS infections, drugs and substance abuse have been on the rise and majorly are being contributed by close relatives whom parents trust so much to take care of their children hence end up turning to be the ghosts.
She added that cases of drug abuse and teenage pregnancies were on the rise, primarily because children have been left alone without proper guidance and counselling, especially during the holiday season.

Absconding responsibility
She noted that many parents have abandoned their roles and left the responsibility of disciplining their children to teachers when it is the primary responsibility of parents to rise their children by constantly advising and counselling them so that they grow up to be morally upright citizens.
The legislature noted that parents nowadays hardly have time for their children as they are busy working, thus making it easy for the youngsters to fall into peer pressure and make wrong decisions and urge them to monitor their children’s movements to ensure that they keep good company and protect them from sexual predators.
She underscored the very important role played by parents in shaping a child’s character, adding they should remain close to their children, so that they can spot and correct any wayward behavior at an early stage.
Donya cautioned residents against female genital mutilation and said the government was on high alert to ensure that they are protected from FGM and early marriages citing that it is an outdated practice and urged those still practicing to change.
She advised parents to constantly always monitor their children’s movement and the friends they hang out with.
