Worth Noting:
- The Deputy President said her death will ignite the issue of land injustices that the Mau Mau fighters were subjected to despite their valour and leading from the front in the fight for independence adding that the debate on the land issue must continue to ensure that the Mau Mau remnants enjoy a piece of what they fought for.
- “As we prepare to bury her, we continue to ponder about the land question; that thousands of Kenyans who fought for independence live in abject poverty even though the British colonialists had set aside funds for their resettlement. These are questions that in the coming days, we shall have a discussion on so the land injustices will be addressed,” the DP noted.

The Government will give freedom fighter, Field Marshal Mukami Kimathi, a dignified and befitting sendoff.
Speaking on Friday morning at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi where the body of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi’s widow is lying, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said that a senior government officer has been designated to work with the family to ensure that Field Marshal Mukami gets an appropriate send-off.
“I want to confirm that the government will designate a very senior officer later in the day to work with the family as we prepare to give Mukami a dignified send off,” the DP said.
Gachagua mourned Mukamias a woman of steel, selfless and kind-hearted.
He described Mukami as one of the Mau Mau fighters who alongside her husband, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, demonstrated her untainted love for the nation when she took part in the war against the white colonialists to liberate Kenya.
“Mukami was a symbol of defiance, mother of the struggle for independence. We are greatly indebted to her valour and grit. She remains an inspiring figure to those of us in leadership,” Gachagua said.

The DP was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Industry, Trade and Investments Moses Kuria, Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau and Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara.
Kuria said Mukami and Dedan’s legacies must be institutionalised, describing her as a symbol of patriotism and valour.
“She is a heroine of this country. We celebrate her life. She never changed her ideals despite the challenges she faced. It’s a call to patriotism and looking at the interests of our nation instead of individuals. The question on land injustices lingers on and will be emphasised during this period,” said Kuria.
Kihara said Mukami was a hero that will be remembered for ages for her steadfastness in the fight for freedom.
“As a nation, we have every reason to mourn and give her a great send off. It is also a moment for us to look deeper into the historical land injustices in the central region and what those who fought with her, and her husband deserve,” said Kihara.
Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau said Mukami will always be an icon of peace and the struggle for independence.
“We are mourning a national hero and trailblazer. She fought for the peace and independence of this country we enjoy today,” she said.
