Bahe Nightingale
He was born in the village of Bine-bil, 14 km from the city of Mardin, Turkey. His father was from Mardin, and his mother was from Syrian Arabs. Because his tongue came out early, his mother used to call him Bahe nightingale.
When Bahe was one and a half years old, he was attacked by a rooster: the rooster brutally choked the defenseless boy, leaving scars on his face and eyes for life. At that moment, Bahe was very scared and stopped talking. When the child was alone, he would have convulsions, he would calm down only in his mother’s arms. Thanks to the efforts of his sisters, Bahe began to speak a little when he was four years old. His parents take him to the village doctor, who assesses the child’s condition as mental retardation. Only one father does not believe this diagnosis. The father, who works as a porter at the railway station, intends to take his son to famous doctors in Mardin, but soon his health deteriorates and he dies.
A helpless mother wants to return to her fatherland, Syria, with her children. While preparing for the trip, he receives a letter from his father. In it, the grandfather said that he did not want to see his mentally retarded grandson and decided not to bring him. Desperate, the mother (who is not separated from her for a single step) takes Bahe to an ancient monastery in Mardin. As he was leaving, he whispered in the ear of the boy, who was crying, unable to understand what was being said:
– Wait for us. We will definitely come back and get you…
When he reached the door of the monastery, he repeated:
“We’ll be back, Bahe…”
At the same time, the entrance of the monastery turns into a little boy’s room. Every day, from morning to night, he waits for his mother with tears in his eyes. Both in cold winter days and in the heat of summer. Every day. 70 years! Yes, he waited exactly 70 years for his mother and sisters… No one took him away from here. He died here.
– It was as if he was a stone in front of the door of the monastery, – the staff of the temple told journalists. – For 70 years he lived with two eyes on the door…
Bahe nightingale became known as “The child who waited the longest in the world for its mother”.
