Nyeri County Launches Infection Prevention and Control Advisory Committee

Nyeri County’s Department of Health Services has launched the 2023–2025 County Infection Prevention and Control Advisory Committee (CIPCAC) and County Antimicrobial Stewardship Interagency Committee (CASIC) work plans. Dr. Joseph Kiragu, the CEC for Health Services, praised the stewardship committees for their performance and emphasised the need for timely awareness on antimicrobial resistance and infection prevention and control.
Both committees will work together to provide a roadmap for implementing the set objectives.
Nyeri County pioneered the development of the first-ever CASIC work plan in Kenya in 2020, with Dr. Oscar Agoro as the County Focal Person.
Other focal persons were appointed from the Department of Agriculture and Environment.
The success of Antimicrobial Awareness (AMR) in Nyeri has been heavily contributed by the mutual collaboration of the three entities with support from various stakeholders.
Dr. Oscar Agoro noted that since the implementation of AMR activities in Nyeri County, the problem of AMR has drastically reduced from 61 per cent in 2019 to 47.6 per cent in 2023.
This reduction has been achieved through the intensive creation of awareness about the safe use and disposal of antibiotics and a multi-sectorial approach involving other departments like agriculture. Dr. Ndinda Kusu, Country Director at the USAID Mtaps Programme, also recognised the Nyeri Team for their outstanding work.
