Shocking statistics have revealed that a staggering ten million Kenyans are at risk of blindness if they won’t access proper eye care to prevent the Blindness, 80 to 90% of which is preventable.
These official statistics were released Thursday by the Kenya Society for the Blind.
Samson Waweru is the Director of the society and he asserts,
“Currently in the country we have one million one hundred thousand people with both partial and total blindness. According to survey, this number can rise upwards to ten million if the Government won’t be proactive enough to ensure that all Kenyans in all corners of the country have access to affordable eye care which includes testing and provision of visual aids,” he noted.
He at the same time questioned the Government why it has been reluctant to provide a budgetary allocation for the society which at the moment survives through fundraising from well-wishers, donors and partners.
“As we mark the disability week, we are imploring upon the Government to provide a budget for the society, to upscale our scope of work and also provide top notch eye care for all Kenyans,” he noted.
Notable supporters of the society include the Christian Blind Mission through which the society has been able to give white canes as well as helping in outreach programs aimed at alleviating Blindness in Kenya.
