Revitalizing Likii: A Transformational Milestone in Land Security and Community Development

Residents of Likii area in Nanyuki town have marked a new dawn.
This follows the successful completion of a verification and validation exercise in the area.
The exercise commonly referred to as Likii A settlement scheme was recently conducted by the County Government of Laikipia, under the Department of Infrastructure, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development, in collaboration with the National Land Commission. Following the move, over 800 allotment letters will soon be issued to identified beneficiaries.
Area governor Joshua Irungu, also introduced the Dispute Resolution Committee whose primary objective is to address the remaining 344 cases, encompassing issues such as double allocation, non-verified plots, contested land, deceased cases, and plots excluded from the survey plan.
This committee, headed by CECM Infrastructure, Ekwam Nabos, comprises key officials including the CO Lands and Physical Planning, Kenneth Kibara, the County Physical Planner, the County Surveyor, the NLC Coordinator, the County Attorney, and Likii Village Representatives.
Their mandate is to resolve disputes arising from the exercise. Successful completion of this exercise will ensure tenure security for long-struggling residents of Likii Settlement Scheme, plagued by tenure insecurity.
The residents will also get to benefit from the exercise through the enhancement of road infrastructure, borehole drilling to secure adequate water supply for both Likii Primary and Secondary High Schools, rehabilitation and restoration of Likii high masts to bolster security and commerce, improvements in sewerage systems stretching from the Makutano area through Likii to Taji Estate, affordable housing initiatives, and advancements in health facilities.
These developments are expected not only to create substantial job opportunities for the youth, thereby improving their livelihoods, but also to address prevalent issues such as unemployment, high rates of insecurity, drug abuse, and early teenage pregnancies in Likii.
Area Deputy Governor Reuben Kamuri, County Secretary Koinange Wahome, Laikipia County CECMs, Chief Officers, and other County Leadership members were also present during the event.
