Uasin Gishu County has disbursed Sh13 million out of the Sh19 million approved to loan various cooperative societies this financial year.
The funds will be used to boost cooperatives that applied for the loan to boost their enterprises.
The county chief officer for Cooperatives and Enterprise Development, Ruth Samoei, stated that her department will work on mechanisms to enhance the fund in the coming years to benefit more societies.
The County Enterprise Development Fund (CEDF) committee chair, Philip Mamet, noted that the county has made the fund accessible, affordable, and available for society. He called on societies to adopt swift repayment models for other societies to benefit from and challenged committee members to strengthen the fund to make it more sustainable.
The Kenya Kwanza administration has developed a blueprint to unlock blue economy opportunities in Lake Victoria, aiming to benefit millions of Kenyans living in the Nyanza region.
Information, Communications, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo stated that the plan was a deliberate plan to spur economic growth in the region, which has lagged behind in development for decades.
The multi-billion project includes the construction of a Sh. 2.5 billion Kabonyo Kanyagwal aquaculture centre of excellence, a ring road along Lake Victoria, the revival of lake transport, and the construction of landing beaches.
Negotiations with the World Bank are ongoing to kick start the project.
The multi-billion project will open up Lake Victoria for tourism, travel, and business, creating job opportunities for locals.
The government has established new administrative units in Homa Bay County to enhance service delivery.
Suba Central and Suba West have been created, along with new divisions including Ruma/Kaksingri East, Kaksingri West, Gwassi South, and Gwassi North. The Suba region also saw the hiving off of new locations like Rang’wa East, Nyamarandi, Sindo, Kwirathia, and Mwegemu.
UDA party youth and women in Suba expressed gratitude for the initiative and expressed appreciation for the ongoing tarmacking of the 74-km Mbita-Magunga-Sori road.
The youth coordinator, Bruce Ogweno, and his women’s league counterpart, Josephine Abonyo, emphasised the importance of the new administrative units and development projects in uplifting the local economy.
The region previously had two subcounties, Suba and Mbita.
Devolution Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika has urged parents to invest in the education of their children, stating that it is the best form of inheritance they can bequeath their children.
“Education remains the equaliser in modern society, shaping our children to become good communicators and eventually secure jobs from where they can serve the country,” said the PS.
Adding to that, “the government is keen to help students endowed with talents to make them self-reliant.”
She urged local leaders to avoid divisive politics and work closely with other officials, especially those from the national government, to foster development in the county.
