The Departmental Committee on Regional Development of the National Assembly has praised progress made on various projects being implemented by the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA), recognizing their role in bolstering the region’s economy.
During the committee’s ongoing inspection visit to Nyanza and Western regions, the Vice-Chair of the Committee, Mary Wamaua lauded the Authority’s efforts in overcoming financial constraints to implement the various projects.
“Despite encountering financial constraints, the LBDA has achieved commendable progress in project implementation. While some projects are yet to reach full operational capacity due to pending funds, the allocated resources have been effectively utilized,” said Wamaua.
Acknowledging the prioritization of projects based on available funds, Wamaua emphasized the importance of equitable resource distribution across the country to stimulate employment opportunities and enhance development.
These sentiments were echoed by Paul Abour (Rongo), who highlighted the positive impact of LBDA projects in uplifting hundreds of livelihoods across the Nyanza region.
“We are impressed by the notable projects such as the Kisumu Convention Center and Kisumu Lake Basin Mall. These multi-billion projects confirms the region’s inclusion in major government initiatives,” said Abour.
CPA Wycliffe Ochiaga, the Managing Director of LBDA, briefed the Committee on the Nyakoe Market Project.
The project was initiated by the President in 2017 and is aimed at promoting regional trade.
Mr. Ochiaga said that Phase 1 was complete and urged the government to speed up the completion of Phase II to fully unlock the region’s trade potential.
During the tour, Committee Members visited a Rice Milling Plant in Kibos, Kisumu County, witnessing technological upgrades aimed at enhancing efficiency and quality in rice production.
Mr. Ochiaga elaborated on the installation of a new rice milling machine, boasting improved capacity and quality control measures to meet market demands effectively.
Furthermore, the Committee received a comprehensive tour of the fingerlings production unit, showcasing technological advancements and environmental stewardship initiatives in aquaculture.
The production unit, operating under a public-private partnership framework between the Kibos ITTC’s and Aquarech, not only aims to meet fish farming demands but also serves as an educational platform for institutions specializing in the Blue Economy.
Despite slight underachievement in fingerlings production targets for FY 2022/23 due to maintenance issues, LBDA remains committed to advancing socio-economic development in the Lake Basin region.
Other Members present at the inspection visit included; Majimbo Kalasinga, Kombe Harrison, Nabulindo Peter, Cherorot Kimutai, Khamis Chome, Paul Abuor, Tungule Charo, Yaqub Farah and area MP, Shakeel Shabbir
