A rescue strategy to revive the lost glory of one of the academic giants in Nyeri County and in the national arena is underway and is being spearheaded by the alumni of the institution.
In 1974, 10 years after it was established, the learning institution in Othaya Constituency was ranked the best school in Agriculture in East Africa that led to them being gifted with a tractor.
This is Chinga Boys High School, an academic as well as co-curriculum activities like music, agriculture, Science Congress and various games.
The Board Chairman of the institution Mwaniki Gachoka said that the Saturday’s meeting was first of the alumni’s and their strategy is to attain a mean grade of 8.4 from last year’s mean of 6.9 points.
Gachoka, a Court of Appeal Judge said that the school is able to take only 60 per cent of the students to the university but in yester years they were able to take more than 80 per cent of the learners to the university level.
“We want to revive the lost glory of education in Chinga Boys to ensure we attain at least a mean grade of 8.4 points from the last year’s mean grade of 6.9. The former academic guru is only taking 60 per cent of the students to public universities and in the past, we were able to take 80 per cent to the higher level of education,” he said

The PS who was the Chief Guest also said that the capitation given by the Ministry of Education to learning institutions is inadequate, hence, old students must chip in to ensure things are running smoothly in in these facilities.
“The money being given by the Ministry of Education in these learning institutions is not enough and we must chip in to ensure things are going as planned in these institutions,” he stated
Professor John Kimenju from the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection said that they will ensure that the institution will go back to competing with other schools in the national level through their mentorship and supporting the needy and bright students.
He noted that this will be done through going back to the vision that was laid by the founders of Chinga Boys back in 1964.
“Just in case we have drifted from the vision, we must go back with humility and with immediate effect. Yes, we should arise and return to our father,” Professor Kimenju said
“We should stop comparing ourselves to others with other schools in Kenya. The original design was to develop a unique institution and develop resourceful people in the society,” he said
Alex Gathii who is the CEO of Tanolope Consultant, a dairy consultancy firm said that they will create a network that will ensure that Chinga Boys alumni will dominate the employment sector in not only in Kenya but in Africa.
Gathii said that his company operates in 12 African countries and through their partnership, they will create a link that will leave a mark in the African continent.
“Chinga Boys alumnis will leave a mark in the country and in Africa by producing resourceful and productive people that will change the society. The link we have of people in the private and public sector will make Chinga great again,” Gathii said
Business mogul and contactor Dan Wamahiu and a close ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who cleared the school in 1990 said that he will supply some of the construction materials worth Sh2 million for the construction of a multi-purpose hall noting that he is among the biggest contractors in Africa.
Wamahiu who was also appointed as the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Agriculture by President William Ruto added that he will ensure that he visits the school once in a month to ensure they attain the target mean score of 8.4 points.
“I am one of the biggest suppliers of construction materials in Africa and I will supply some of the construction materials for the construction of a multi-purpose for free to ensure we get away with the outdated hall,” he said
Nyeri businessman and the New Democrats (TND) political party Dr Thuo Mathenge who donated Sh100,000 for starting the foundation of an e-library said that they will continue supporting the institution and ensure the library is complete in the next one year.
He called on the learners to maintain a high level of discipline as they have always portrayed noting that they school has never gone for any strike since 2015 event when other schools were experiencing unrest.
The school Principal Rachi Kirimi noted that they will not relent and they will achieve the targeted mean grade and bring back the lost glory of the school.
The pomp and colorful event was climaxed by 1471 students each receiving a queen cake and a 10 kilogram cake worth sh 115,000 for the alumni’s baked by Havanna Cakes, whose one of the directors; J B Wachiuri is an old boy of the school.
The students could not hide their joy after Wamahiu donated a bull for the weekend, Alex Gathii of Tanolope another bull for next weekend, Dr Thuo Mathenge donated Rafiki bread to every student with the the Board Chairman Gachoka a soda to every student.
Optiven Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr George Wachiuri was among other former students who generously donated to the school.
