The Department of Culture and Tourism in Tharaka Nithi County is implementing a robust strategy for revamping the tourism sector.
The Director for the Culture and Tourism department, Mr Geoffrey Chabari on Friday held a meeting with Mt Kenya National Park, Chogoria Gate to deliberate on how to promote the entrance which is the most scenic but currently not doing very well.
Among the stakeholders were Mt. Kenya National Park Assistant Director and the Chogoria Forest Station Forester who lauded the county government led by Governor Muthomi Njuki for the plans.
“We are here as stakeholders to deliberate on how to promote our Chogoria gate which is the most scenic compared to Naru Moru, Kihari, Mawingu, Sirimon and Kamweti gates,” said Mr Chabari.
He noted tourists climbing the biggest mountain in the country like the Chogoria gate due to its terrain which enables acclimatization.
The gate also leads one to point Lenana, Baren Table, Batian and the mountain lakes including Lake Michaelson which is popularly known for trout.
The tourists take photos of beautiful valleys and also adore watching elephants swim at the Mpaku Swamp.
For the history of our fight for freedom from colonialists, local and international tourists using Chogoria gate visit Mau Mau caves which have bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and guard rooms.
It is at the caves where freedom fighters planned serious operations and hid after attacking colonialists but only Mau Mau generals could be allowed to spend nights there.
Tourists entering through the Chogria gate also have a chance to learn the Ameru culture including preparing traditional brew and porridge from millet, sorghum and finger millet.
The route has many tour guides and potters who help tourists go up the mountain.
The Department of Culture and Tourism is also preparing for the 2024 Ura Gate Cultural Festival which is held every year in August at the entrance of Meru National Park- Ura gate.
Already the department has held auditions in all the 15 wards for the traditional groups to participate at the mega event that is tentatively scheduled for 27-31 August.
