NEWS IN BRIEF 11 June 2024

REREC plans to allocate Sh2.1 billion to enhance power connections in Mount Kenya counties by connecting 14,500 households.

The programme, which will benefit counties such as Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, and Marsabit, will increase power connections to households and public facilities such as schools, hospitals, and markets.

The director of REREC, Mark Nderitu, emphasised the government’s commitment to achieving 100% power connection in the near future.

He underscored the benefits of electricity for social and economic development in rural areas, including improved education, increased working hours, and the ability to use technology in homes.

The Rugongo Ruraya power project in Kigumo sub-county will connect 785 households, benefiting tea farmers who were previously unable to sell their produce at night.

Nderitu urged development partners to allocate funds and support electrification programmes to accelerate rural electrification in priority areas.

Public health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni

Public health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has assured Kenyans that the government is fully implementing the Social Health Insurance programme to improve health services.

She stated that Kenyans are free to use the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) card to access health services in all health facilities.

Muthoni emphasised that no one will be turned away from any hospital once it is fully implemented. Kenyans will pay Sh 300 per month, compared to Sh 500 in the NHIF programme.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has urged political leaders to be mindful of their words and avoid statements that could bring disunity to the country.

He underscored the importance of building a nation where every Kenyan is judged by the content of their brains and not the ethnicity of where they come from.

He added, “We want a country where all Kenyans will feel comfortable wherever they are.” adding that there is no tribe in the country that can walk alone and go far.

He called on Kenyans to shun leaders planting seeds of discord in society, saying that MPs should know that they were elected to make laws.

Wetangula emphasises the importance of fostering unity and understanding among Kenyans.

Bomet County has implemented an online system to improve the efficiency of healthcare services.

The system aims to track the supply of medicines from Longisa County Hospital to various healthcare facilities, ensuring timely access to essential medications for patients.

Dr. Felix Langat, the County Chief Officer for Health, emphasised the importance of the system in addressing concerns about insufficient drug supplies and facilitating accurate monitoring of drug distribution.

The system also streamlines the management of medicine expiry dates, ensuring efficient utilisation across all sub-counties.

Dr. Joseph Sitonik, the Bomet County Health CEC, commended the increased supply delivery rate, with 83% of ordered supplies being delivered compared to previous years, especially during challenging months.

Teachers and learners in Uasin Gishu County have praised the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) STEM Outreach Mentorship Programme.

The programme aims to enhance learners’ and teachers’ creative and innovative skills through STEM, enabling them to choose the STEM pathway from Grades 10 to 12 that would spur the country into industrial development.

The programme enables learners to find solutions to address real-life problems in society.

CEMASTEA, a state corporation under the Ministry of Education, is conducting outreach activities called STEM on the Wheels, which is well-equipped with the basic apparatus and models to help learners in grades 7 and 8 discover themselves in various learning areas.

The outreach has enhanced learners’ potential, especially in STEM subjects such as Integrated science, Biology, Physics and Chemistry, Mathematics, and ICT.

The teachers expressed gratitude for the outreach, noting that every learner has potential if given the opportunity to participate.
