The country’s leading water and sanitation agency has launched an ambitious five-year strategic plan that is expected to boost the provision of the services in the Mountain region.
The agency; Tana Water Works Development Agency is eying increase access to quality Water and sanitation services for the more than four million residents of Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.
The nearly KSh64 billion plan was launched during a colourful ceremony at Bantu Africa Resort and SPA near Nyeri town.
Among the strategic objectives is increase access to quality water services from 57.8 per cent to 90 per cent by 2027.
On sanitation, the agency whose chairman is Wanyaga Gathaka plans to increase the services from 8.1 per cent to 30 per cent by the end of the strategic plan.
This will be achieved by among others, enhancing research, innovation and uptake in technology, enhancing partnership and collaborations, enhancing stakeholder participation and engagement as well as improve the customer satisfaction index from 88 per cent to 90 per cent by 2027.
Further, other strategic objectives include, enhancing financial sustainability, improving institutional processes and operations as well as enhancing human resource capacity.
Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Administration Secretary Mr Stephen Kihara presided over the launching ceremony that was graced by stakeholders from the region and beyond. He represented Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Dr Julius Korir who was slated as the Chief Guest.
The forum was informed that the strategic plan will be implemented through an elaborate action plan indicating targets and responsibilities for each key activity, through setting of annual targets
Moreover, the agency has developed an action plan which constitutes the strategic issues, strategic goals, key result areas, outcomes, strategic objectives, key activities, expected outputs, outputs indicators, annual budgets, annual targets and responsibility for execution of the plan.
The agency will develop annual work plan drawn from implementation matrix. The work plan will have clear targets, performance indicators, budgets and assigned responsibilities.
The agency Chief Executive Officer Eng Philip Gichuki said he was optimistic his team of staff with the support of the board will deliver the plan.
The agency board chairman called for continued concerted effort among the different players so as to effectively discharge their duties with the Administration Secretary lauding them for coming out with such a plan.
